For the summary part of the listings for your pages, the search engines may use the description META tag for each page. If there is no description META tag, they may use information from DMOZ (if you are lucky enough to be listed there). If neither of these are available, they will usually pull some of the text from early in the page - this is generally the worst case scenario.
Good META descriptions - and therefore good summaries of your pages - can increase traffic by enticing visitors to click, but they won't raise your ranking.
- Create different description tags for different pages. Using the same or similar descriptions on every page of a site isn't very helpful. Create descriptions that accurately describe each page.
- Include clearly tagged facts in the description. The meta description doesn't just have to be in sentence format; it's also a great place to include structured data about the page. Product pages might have the key bits of information - price, manufacturer - scattered throughout a page. A good meta description can bring all this data together. For example, the following meta description provides detailed information about a book.
<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Author: Jack London, Title: The Sea Wolf, Price: $27.99, Length: 600 pages">
- Generate descriptions from your database. For e-commerce sites, hand-written descriptions for products can be a problem. We can, however, generate descriptions from the product information.
- Make sure your descriptions are actually descriptive. META descriptions aren't visible on the page, so it's easy to forget about them. High-quality descriptions may be displayed in search results, though, and can go a long way to improving the quality and quantity of your search traffic.
